Definition of HbA1C Test
The HbA1C test measures the average blood sugar level over the past 2-3 months. Also called glycated hemoglobin test, Its an important test in monitoring the effectiveness of therapy for diabetes.
Why and when HbA1c is required.
Patients with diabetes require their sugar levels to be maintained within a tight range. This is of critical importance in order to avoid complications related to high and uncontrolled blood sugar levels. HbA1C test is therefore recommended for all diabetic patients whether on insulin, oral medications or on diet control.
This test should be done at least once every three months.
How it’s done and how to prepare
The HbA1C test is carried out on blood drawn from your arm. No special preparation is necessary before the test. Unlike the Fasting blood sugar test, you can eat or drink and take your medications normally prior to the test
