Test Description

The Phospholipid Profile is a laboratory test designed to detect the presence of specific antibodies associated with Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS).

This autoimmune disorder is characterized by recurrent thrombosis (blood clots) and/or pregnancy complications, such as miscarriages or pre-eclampsia.

The profile typically measures several types of antibodies, including:

  • Lupus Anticoagulant (LA)
  • Anticardiolipin Antibodies (aCL) IgG and IgM
  • Anti-β2 Glycoprotein I Antibodies (anti-β2GPI) IgG and IgM

These antibodies are directed against membrane phospholipids and their associated proteins, which play a crucial role in blood coagulation.

Indications of the Phospholipid Profile Test

The Phospholipid Profile is indicated for patients who may have:

  • Recurrent venous or arterial thrombosis.
  • History of multiple miscarriages or pregnancy-related complications.
  • Difficulty conceiving or experiencing adverse pregnancy outcomes.
  • Symptoms suggestive of APS, especially in conjunction with other autoimmune disorders like systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

Patient Preparation/Instructions

Patients are generally advised to follow these instructions before the test:

  • Fasting: Fasting is not usually required, but it’s best to confirm with your healthcare provider.
  • Medications: Inform your doctor about any medications you are taking, as some may affect test results.
  • Hydration: Drink plenty of water before the test to facilitate blood draw.

Typical Reference Values

Reference values can vary based on the laboratory but generally include:

  • Lupus Anticoagulant: Negative
  • Anticardiolipin Antibodies:
    • IgG: < 20 GPL units
    • IgM: < 20 MPL units
  • Anti-β2 Glycoprotein I Antibodies:
    • IgG: < 20 units
    • IgM: < 20 units

Persistent positive results on two or more occasions at least 12 weeks apart are typically necessary for a diagnosis of APS.

Turnaround Time

The typical turnaround time for the phospholipid Profile results is approximately 5 working days, depending on the laboratory processing times.
