Test Description

The STI Multiplex (NG/CT/MG) test is a multiplex PCR assay that detects the DNA of three common sexually transmitted infection bacteria: Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG), Chlamydia trachomatis (CT), and Mycoplasma genitalium (MG). It is a highly sensitive and specific molecular test designed to identify these pathogens quickly from urine or swab samples.

Indications of the Test

This test is mainly ordered when patients show symptoms of STIs such as genital discomfort, discharge, pain during urination, or unexplained pelvic pain. It is also recommended for people who may have been exposed to STIs or require routine screening, as these infections often occur without symptoms but can lead to serious reproductive health complications.

Patient Preparation/Instructions

Patients should avoid urinating for at least one hour before giving a urine sample. For swab samples, avoid using vaginal medications, douching, or sexual intercourse 24 hours before the test. Follow any specific instructions given by the Labtestzote staff to ensure accurate sample collection.

Typical Reference Values

Results are qualitative, reported as either negative (no infection detected) or positive (presence of NG, CT, and/or MG). No bacterial DNA detected means a negative result, while detection of DNA from one or more pathogens indicates infection and the need for treatment.

Test results usually take between a few hours and up to 48 hours, depending on the laboratory’s workload and processing time.
