Test Description
Apolipoprotein A-I (ApoA-I) is a structural and functional protein that constitutes approximately 70% of the protein in high-density lipoproteins (HDL)[5]. It plays a vital role in reverse cholesterol transport, cellular cholesterol homeostasis, immunity, inflammation, apoptosis, and viral, bacterial infections[4]. This test measures the levels of ApoA-I in blood, which can help assess the function of the cardiovascular system and the risk of cardiovascular disease[5].
Indications/Applications for ApoA1 Test
– Assess the function of the cardiovascular system
– Evaluate the risk of cardiovascular disease
– Monitor the effects of medications on cholesterol levels
– Detect genetic abnormalities related to ApoA-I, such as ApoA-I Milano, which is a naturally occurring mutant associated with reduced HDL cholesterol content and increased triglyceride levels[4].
Patient Preparation/Instructions
1. Fasting: It is recommended that the patient fast for at least 8 hours before the test.
2. Specimen Collection: Separate serum from cells as soon as possible or within 2 hours of collection and transfer to 1-mL storage/transport temperature.
