Antenatal Tests Description
Antenatal tests, also referred to as ANC profile Tests are a group of blood and urine tests recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy to assess the health of the mother-to-be and the unborn baby. The tests included in the ANC profile are:
- Urine 10 Parameters and Microscopy
- Complete blood count (CBC)
- Blood Sugar
- HIV 1 & 2 Test
- Blood group -ABO/Rh
- Hepatitis B Surface antigen
- Syphilis – rapid plasma reagin
- Rubella Antibodies
- Hb Electrophoresis (Sickle Cell Trait)
- Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)
The ANC profile tests also help the doctor monitor the growth of the fetus and provide treatment if required
Use of the Test
The ANC profile tests help assess the general health of the mother, along with testing for diabetes, genetically transferred diseases, and infectious diseases like HIV. The tests are used to check for diseases and infections that can affect the mother and the baby
Patient Preparation/Instructions
It is recommended to get ANC Profile Tests at the earliest time, preferably in the first trimester. While there are no specific patient preparations required for ANC profile tests, it is recommended to consult with a doctor or Nurse/midwife before undergoing the tests. It’s important to share your medical history with them so they can advise you on additional testing.
Interpretation Of ANC Profile Test Results
The typical reference values for ANC profile tests may vary by the test done. Your doctor or midwife will discuss each result and come up with a care plan if needed.
