What is the HPV DNA Test?
The HPV DNA Test, also known as the human papillomavirus test, is a screening test that detects the presence of high-risk strains of the HPV virus in cervical cells. These high-risk strains are associated with an increased risk of developing cervical cancer.
In Kenya, cervical cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women. Screening has been shown to drastically decrease the occurrence of this disease.
The test is important in the screening for cervical cancer. Some high-risk strains of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) have been shown to lead to cervical cancer.
The test detects the presence of the high-risk types, mostly 16,18, 30, and 33. According to the Ministry of Health guidelines and the WHO, HPV testing is the preferred method of cervical cancer screening in Kenya.
A positive result does not indicate the presence of cancer. However, it allows the patient and her healthcare provider to monitor the patient closely for changes in the cervix that could lead to cervical cancer.
For a negative result, regular screening is advised at intervals of 5 years.
It’s advisable to start screening from the age of 25 up to 60 years.
Patient Preparation/Instructions
There are no specific dietary or medication restrictions for the HPV test. It is recommended to schedule the test when you are not menstruating, as blood can interfere with the test results. Additionally, it is advised to avoid douching, using tampons, or engaging in sexual intercourse 48 hours before the test.
The sample for the HPV DNA test is a cervical swab. Our trained staff will insert a speculum to visualise the cervix. A soft plastic brush is rubbed on the cervix to collect cells on the cervix. The brush tip is put in a special liquid and submitted to the lab for analysis.
Typical Reference Values
The test results are reported as either positive or negative. A positive result indicates the presence of high-risk HPV strains, while a negative result means that these strains were not found in the sample.
