Female Hormone Profile Test (Comprehensive Package)

The Female Hormone Profile is a comprehensive blood test package that evaluates the hormones responsible for regulating the menstrual cycle, ovulation, fertility, and overall reproductive health. It provides valuable information for investigating hormonal imbalances and is commonly requested by women experiencing menstrual irregularities, difficulty conceiving, symptoms of menopause, or conditions such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).

This profile measures the following hormones:

  • Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
  • Luteinising Hormone (LH)
  • Estradiol (E2)
  • Progesterone
  • Prolactin

Who should consider this test?

Your healthcare provider may recommend this profile if you are experiencing:

  • Irregular, infrequent or absent menstrual periods
  • Difficulty conceiving or undergoing a fertility assessment
  • Recurrent miscarriage investigations
  • Symptoms suggestive of PCOS
  • Unexplained infertility
  • Suspected early menopause or menopausal symptoms
  • Abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Symptoms of elevated prolactin levels such as unexpected breast milk production or menstrual disturbances
  • Monitoring response to fertility or hormone treatment

Why is this test important?

Hormones work together to regulate ovulation and the menstrual cycle. Even a small imbalance can affect fertility, menstrual health, and overall well-being.

The Female Hormone Profile helps your healthcare provider:

  • Assess ovarian function
  • Evaluate ovulation
  • Investigate fertility concerns
  • Identify hormonal causes of menstrual disorders
  • Support the diagnosis of conditions such as PCOS or hyperprolactinaemia
  • Assess hormonal changes associated with menopause

While this profile provides valuable diagnostic information, it should always be interpreted together with your medical history, symptoms, physical examination, and, where appropriate, imaging studies such as pelvic ultrasound. No single hormone test can diagnose a condition on its own.

Preparing for the test

A venous blood sample from your arm is required.

Although no fasting is usually necessary, the timing of sample collection is important because hormone levels naturally change throughout the menstrual cycle.

General recommendations include:

  • FSH, LH and Estradiol: Ideally collected between Day 2 and Day 5 of the menstrual cycle unless your healthcare provider advises otherwise.
  • Progesterone: Best collected approximately 7 days after ovulation (often around Day 21 in a 28-day cycle). Women with shorter or longer cycles may require testing on a different day.
  • Prolactin: Ideally collected in the morning after resting quietly for 20–30 minutes. Avoid strenuous exercise, significant stress, and breast stimulation before the test, as these may temporarily increase prolactin levels.

If you are pregnant, postmenopausal, have irregular cycles, or are taking hormone medications, your healthcare provider may recommend a different collection schedule.

Medications that may affect results

Certain medications can influence hormone levels, including:

  • Oral contraceptive pills
  • Hormone replacement therapy (HRT)
  • Fertility medications
  • Some psychiatric medications that increase prolactin
  • Corticosteroids and other hormonal treatments

Please inform your healthcare provider and the laboratory about any medications or supplements you are taking. Do not stop prescribed medication unless specifically instructed by your clinician.

Understanding your results

Female hormone levels vary naturally according to:

  • The stage of your menstrual cycle
  • Age
  • Pregnancy status
  • Menopausal status

For this reason, there is no single “normal” hormone level that applies to every woman. Your laboratory report includes assay-specific reference intervals, but the most accurate interpretation considers your symptoms, menstrual cycle timing, and clinical history.

What if my results are abnormal?

Abnormal results do not necessarily mean you have a specific medical condition. Depending on your results and symptoms, your healthcare provider may recommend additional investigations such as:

  • Thyroid function tests
  • Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH)
  • Androgen hormone testing
  • Pelvic ultrasound
  • Repeat hormone testing at a different stage of your menstrual cycle
  • Review by a gynaecologist or endocrinologist
