Herpes Simplex Virus-1(HSV-1) Test

The Herpes Simplex Virus-1 (HSV-1) Test detects either the virus itself or antibodies (IgG/IgM) produced by the body in response to HSV-1 infection. HSV-1 cause  oral herpes (commonly known as cold sores) but can also cause genital herpes, especially through oral-genital contact. This Test   can  identifying both symptomatic and asymptomatic infections and in distinguishing HSV-1 from HSV-2.

Indications for the Test

This test is recommended for individuals who:

  • Present with cold sores, mouth ulcers, or blisters on the lips or face.

  • Experience genital sores, especially following oral sex.

  • Have a partner diagnosed with HSV-1 or who displays symptoms.

  • Are pregnant or planning pregnancy, due to the risk of neonatal herpes.

  • Experience unexplained genital symptoms or recurrent ulcers.

Patient Preparation

  • No fasting is required for the antibody (blood) test.

  • For swab-based testing, do not apply antiviral creams or ointments for at least 24 hours before specimen collection.

  • Inform the healthcare provider if you are on antiviral medication, as it may impact test results.

Reference Values

  • Negative: No HSV-1 antibodies detected; however, early testing post-exposure may result in false negatives.

  • IgG Positive: Indicates past exposure to HSV-1; the virus may be dormant but present in the body.

  • IgM Positive: Suggests a current or recent infection and may indicate an initial outbreak.

Interpretation of Results

  • Negative: No detectable antibodies or viral material. May require retesting if done too early after exposure.

  • IgG Positive: Confirms previous infection; person is likely a carrier even without symptoms.

  • IgM Positive: Indicates a new or reactivated infection and may correlate with active symptoms.

  • Antibody testing cannot determine the exact timing of infection and should be interpreted alongside clinical presentation.

Turnaround Time

  • Blood antibody test results: typically available in 1 to 3 days.

  • Swab or PCR test results: typically available in 1 to 5 days, depending on the lab.
