The Herpes Simplex Virus-1 (HSV-1) Test detects either the virus itself or antibodies (IgG/IgM) produced by the body in response to HSV-1 infection. HSV-1 cause oral herpes (commonly known as cold sores) but can also cause genital herpes, especially through oral-genital contact. This Test can identifying both symptomatic and asymptomatic infections and in distinguishing HSV-1 from HSV-2.
Indications for the Test
This test is recommended for individuals who:
- 
Present with cold sores, mouth ulcers, or blisters on the lips or face. 
- 
Experience genital sores, especially following oral sex. 
- 
Have a partner diagnosed with HSV-1 or who displays symptoms. 
- 
Are pregnant or planning pregnancy, due to the risk of neonatal herpes. 
- 
Experience unexplained genital symptoms or recurrent ulcers. 
Patient Preparation
- 
No fasting is required for the antibody (blood) test. 
- 
For swab-based testing, do not apply antiviral creams or ointments for at least 24 hours before specimen collection. 
- 
Inform the healthcare provider if you are on antiviral medication, as it may impact test results. 
Reference Values
- 
Negative: No HSV-1 antibodies detected; however, early testing post-exposure may result in false negatives. 
- 
IgG Positive: Indicates past exposure to HSV-1; the virus may be dormant but present in the body. 
- 
IgM Positive: Suggests a current or recent infection and may indicate an initial outbreak. 
Interpretation of Results
- 
Negative: No detectable antibodies or viral material. May require retesting if done too early after exposure. 
- 
IgG Positive: Confirms previous infection; person is likely a carrier even without symptoms. 
- 
IgM Positive: Indicates a new or reactivated infection and may correlate with active symptoms. 
- 
Antibody testing cannot determine the exact timing of infection and should be interpreted alongside clinical presentation. 
Turnaround Time
- 
Blood antibody test results: typically available in 1 to 3 days. 
- 
Swab or PCR test results: typically available in 1 to 5 days, depending on the lab.
