What is the Chlamydia NAAT?
The Chlamydia NAAT (Nucleic Acid Amplification Test) is a highly sensitive and specific test used to detect the genetic material (DNA) of Chlamydia trachomatis bacteria, the cause of chlamydia infections. It measures the presence of bacterial DNA in samples such as urine or swabs from the cervix, vagina, urethra, rectum, or throat.
Indications of the Chlamydia NAAT Test
This test is ordered to diagnose chlamydia infection, especially in individuals showing symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection like unusual discharge, painful urination, pelvic pain, or bleeding between periods. It is also used for routine screening of high-risk individuals, retesting after treatment, and testing newborns if maternal infection was present at delivery.
Patient Preparation/Instructions
No special preparation is needed. Patients should provide a first-catch urine sample or allow collection of swabs from relevant areas.
Avoid sexual activity until results are received if infection is suspected, and avoid sexual contact for 7 days after completing treatment if the test is positive.
Typical Reference Values
A normal or negative result indicates the absence of Chlamydia trachomatis DNA. A positive result indicates infection and the need for treatment.
