Transferrin Saturation Test

What is the Transferrin Saturation Test?

Transferrin Saturation Test measures the percentage of transferrin (a blood protein) that is carrying iron. It is calculated using your blood’s serum iron and total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), showing how much iron is available and being transported in your body. This test helps assess your iron levels and detect disorders like iron deficiency or iron overload.

Indications of the Transferrin Saturation Test

Doctors recommend this test if you have:

  • Signs of iron deficiency anemia: fatigue, weakness, pale skin, dizziness.

  • Suspected iron overload/hemochromatosis: joint pain, chronic tiredness, abnormal liver function.

  • Symptoms potentially due to chronic diseases, or for monitoring iron therapy.

Patient Preparation/Instructions

  • Fasting may be recommended: You might need to avoid food and iron supplements 8-12 hours before your test. Water is usually allowed.

  • Inform your doctor about medications or supplements, as they can affect results.

  • If you’re unsure, ask your doctor for personal instructions.
