UIBC Test – Unsaturated Iron-Binding Capacity Test

KSh1,150.00

What is the UIBC Test?

The UIBC (Unsaturated Iron-Binding Capacity) test is a blood test that measures the reserve capacity of transferrin, a protein that helps transport iron in your blood. It tells your doctor how much transferrin in your blood isn’t yet carrying iron. This test is commonly done along with iron and TIBC (Total Iron-Binding Capacity) tests to give a clear picture of your body’s iron status.

Note: UIBC is a calculated parameter from Iron level and TIBC.

Indications of the UIBC Test

Your doctor may recommend a UIBC test if you have symptoms or conditions related to iron imbalance, such as:

  • Signs of iron deficiency (fatigue, weakness, pale skin)

  • Chronic blood loss (from menstruation, injury, or gastrointestinal issues)

  • Diseases causing iron overload (like hemochromatosis)

  • Chronic kidney disease or ongoing infection

  • Monitoring of anaemia or assessment during pregnancy
The test helps diagnose whether you have too little or too much iron in your body and aids in identifying the cause of anaemia.

Patient Preparation/Instructions

Before your UIBC test:

  • You may be asked to fast (not eat or drink anything except water) for 8–12 hours prior to the blood draw. This helps ensure accurate results. Follow the instructions given by your healthcare provider or on the Labtestzote website.

  • Avoid iron-containing supplements for 24 hours before your test.

  • Let your doctor know about any medications or supplements you are taking, as these could affect your results.

Typical Reference Values for UIBC Test

Typical normal ranges for adults may vary slightly between laboratories, but commonly, a normal UIBC value is:

  • 111–343µg/dL (micrograms per deciliter)

  • Some labs may set the range as 120–470µg/dL
Your lab report will display the normal range used for your specific result.
