What is the Stool test (Routine for Ova & Cysts)
The Stool Test Routine for Ova & Cysts is a laboratory examination that detects intestinal parasites and their eggs (ova) as well as cysts in a stool sample.
It involves microscopic analysis for protozoan cysts, trophozoites, and helminth eggs, commonly causing infections.
Reasons for doing the Stool test
This test is ordered when symptoms suggest intestinal parasitic infection, such as prolonged diarrhea, abdominal cramps, mucus or blood in stool, nausea, vomiting, and unexplained gastrointestinal distress. It is also recommended for recent travelers, those exposed to outbreaks, or residents in developing countries.
How to prepare for a Stool test
Patients should avoid taking antacids, antidiarrheal drugs, laxatives, antibiotics, and antiparasitic drugs for at least two weeks before sample collection. Stool should not be collected during menstruation or if there is bleeding from hemorrhoids or the intestinal tract. A stool sample is collected in a provided container from multiple sites in the stool and delivered to the lab, preferably within 24 hours.
Expected “Normal Result”
Normal stool does not contain eggs (ova), cysts, or parasites. Detection of any ova or cysts indicates infection and requires treatment.

Results are usually available within 24 to 48 hours after the stool sample is received at the lab.
