HSV PCR Test Overview
The HSV PCR test detects Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV-1 or HSV-2) DNA in clinical samples using real-time polymerase chain reaction, confirming active infection with high sensitivity even at low viral loads. It differentiates HSV-1 (typically oral) from HSV-2 (genital) and outperforms serology or culture for acute diagnosis.
Indications of HSV PCR Test
Order for vesicular lesions, genital ulcers, encephalitis symptoms (headache, seizure), neonatal exposure, immunocompromised patients with atypical rashes, or recurrent outbreaks; ideal for primary infection confirmation, asymptomatic shedding, or CSF in suspected HSV meningitis.
Patient Preparation/Instructions
No fasting required. Optimal samples: unroofed vesicle swab, genital lesion swab, CSF (1-2 mL), or serum/plasma; avoid swabs in transport medium >24 hours old.
Clean site with saline before swabbing; for genital, avoid urination 1-2 hours prior.
Typical Reference Values
Qualitative: Detected (positive for HSV DNA) or Not Detected (negative).
Quantitative versions report copies/mL (e.g., >500 copies = active replication).
Type-specific: HSV-1 positive, HSV-2 negative, or both
Report Turnaround
Results generally ready in 1-5 days
