Blood Alcohol Test
The Blood Alcohol Test, also known as Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) Test, is a precise medical analysis used to measure the amount of alcohol present in your bloodstream. Unlike breathalyzers, which provide an estimate, a blood-based BAC test is the “gold standard” for accuracy, providing definitive data for medical, legal, or workplace requirements.
At Labtest Zote, we provide discreet and professional testing services through our KMLTTB licensed laboratory network, ensuring your results meet both international clinical standards and local legal requirements.
Why is the BAC test done?
A BAC test is commonly requested for several reasons:
- Medical Emergencies: To diagnose alcohol poisoning or explain an altered mental state (confusion or unconsciousness).
- Employment Screening: Many high-risk industries in Kenya require BAC testing following workplace accidents or as part of routine safety audits.
- Legal & Forensic Requirements: To provide accurate evidence in cases of suspected “driving under the influence” (DUI).
- Recovery Monitoring: To support individuals in alcohol treatment programs.
Test Preparation and Instructions
To ensure the most accurate results, please follow these guidelines:
- Fasting: No fasting is required for this test.
- Documentation: If the test is for legal or official workplace purposes, please bring a valid National ID or Passport.
- Medication: Inform the lab technician if you are using medications, mouthwash, or cough syrups that contain alcohol, as these can affect the reading.
- Timing: Alcohol is processed by the liver over time. For the most accurate “incident-related” reading, the sample should ideally be taken within 6 to 12 hours of consumption.
Reference Ranges and Interpretation
The results are usually expressed as a percentage or in milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL). Reference ranges are based on WHO and CDC clinical guidelines.
| BAC Level (%) | Clinical State | Common Symptoms |
| 0.00% | Negative | Normal (No alcohol detected) |
| 0.01% – 0.05% | Mild Impairment | Relaxation, slight coordination changes |
| 0.08% | Legal Limit | Legally intoxicated (Driving limit in many jurisdictions) |
| 0.10% – 0.20% | Significant Intoxication | Slurred speech, loss of balance, nausea |
| 0.30% – 0.40% | Severe Toxicity | Potential loss of consciousness, life-threatening |
| Above 0.40% | Critical | High risk of coma or respiratory failure |
Note: Alcohol affects individuals differently based on weight, gender, and metabolism. A “normal” result for a non-drinker is 0.00%.
