What is the Comprehensive Metabolic Panel?
The Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP) is a blood test that measures 14 different substances in your blood. These include glucose, calcium, electrolytes (such as sodium, potassium, bicarbonate, and chloride), proteins (albumin and total protein), as well as kidney- and liver-related markers (including ALP, ALT, AST, bilirubin, BUN, and creatinine). The CMP provides valuable information about your overall metabolism, fluid balance, kidney and liver health, and blood sugar control.
Indications of the Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP) Test
Your doctor may order a CMP if you:
-
Have symptoms such as fatigue, confusion, swelling, or unexplained weight changes.
-
Have a condition affecting your liver, kidneys, or metabolism (like diabetes or hypertension).
-
Need routine health screening or to monitor ongoing treatment, medication side effects, or chronic conditions.
Patient Preparation/Instructions
-
You may be asked to fast (no food or drink except water) for 8–12 hours before your test. Always confirm with your doctor or the lab, as different tests or panels might have specific requirements.
-
Continue regular medications unless told otherwise by your healthcare provider.
