Test Description

Vibrio Cholera Culture is used in the isolation and identification of Vibrio cholerae serogroup O1 or O139 by culture of a stool specimen and remains the gold standard for the laboratory diagnosis of cholera. The selective thiosulfate–citrate–bile salts agar (TCBS) is ideal for isolation and identification[1].

Indications of the Test

This test is used to diagnose cholera in patients with acute watery diarrhoea, especially in areas where access to diagnostic laboratory testing is limited[1].

Patient Preparation/Instructions

Cary Blair media is ideal for transport, and the selective thiosulfate–citrate–bile salts agar (TCBS) is ideal for isolation and identification[1].

Typical Reference Values

The presence of a single V.cholerae bacterium is significant.
